Discover the Lock Museum of America in Terryville, CT

Tucked along Main Street in Terryville, Connecticut, there’s a place where history, craftsmanship, and ingenuity come together in a way you won’t find anywhere else in the country. Welcome to the Lock Museum of America. A true hidden gem, and the only museum of its kind in the United States.

…locks are more than mechanisms. They are “an engineering marvel,” built on principles that have fascinated humans for centuries…
Tom Hennessy
Founder, Lock Museum of America

Where Innovation Was Born

Set on the original site of the Eagle Lock Company headquarters, the museum stands at the heart of what was once the epicenter of American lock making. Founded in 1854, Eagle Lock Company helped shape Terryville into a global leader in manufacturing, employing thousands and producing locks that would travel the world. Today, that legacy lives on. Inside the museum’s eight-tempered rooms, visitors are surrounded by one of the largest collections of locks, keys, handcuffs, and ornate door hardware anywhere in the world.

Many pieces were designed and manufactured in Connecticut, showcasing the ingenuity and craftsmanship that defined an era. From medieval locks to Victorian hardware, from prison doors to delicate skeleton keys, every artifact tells a story of human curiosity and the timeless pursuit of security. As museum founder Tom Hennessy once said, locks are more than mechanisms. They are “an engineering marvel,” built on principles that have fascinated humans for centuries.

More Than a Museum, A Living Story

The Lock Museum of America is not just about objects behind glass. It is about people, innovation, and the evolution of an industry that still shapes our daily lives.

A visit here connects you to:
• The origins of modern security and mechanical design
• The rise of American manufacturing in New England
• The craftsmen and visionaries who elevated locksmithing into a respected profession

Just a short walk away, the historic Terryville Water Wheel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, tells another part of the story. Powered by the Pequabuck River, it once drove the machinery that made this region a manufacturing powerhouse.

Engaging the Next Generation

The museum is also a powerful educational resource. School groups, families, and curious visitors of all ages can explore the STEM principles behind lock design, engineering, and problem-solving.

And for those who want a more immersive experience, the museum hosts interactive adventures like its escape room-style challenge, where participants solve puzzles, crack codes, and unlock antique safes in a race against time. It’s history you don’t just learn. It’s history you experience.

A Mission Worth Supporting

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Lock Museum of America depends on community support to preserve and share this important legacy. That’s why recent support from the Yankee Security Convention is so meaningful.

Their grant, which will help the museum fund a new heating system, will allow the museum to remain open year-round, ensuring that this one-of-a-kind collection can continue to educate, inspire, and engage visitors even all year round.

This investment reflects a shared mission. To educate, to preserve the legacy of the locksmith industry, and to inspire future generations to see it as a viable, skilled, and rewarding profession. It is not just about honoring the past. It is about securing the future.
